Welcome to Fourth & Gill
Fourth & Gill is a historic neighborhood just north of downtown Knoxville. The houses in the neighborhood reflect two distinct building periods. From 1880 – 1915, Victorian-style homes were built in the neighborhood and then transitioned into the Classical style. From 1910 – 1930, more of the one-story Craftsman and bungalow style homes were built in the neighborhood, characterized by low-slung roofs and large porches. From its early prominence, the neighborhood went into decline heading into the 1960s due to economic issues and the construction of the I-40 interstate, which destroyed some of the neighborhood's most prominent homes.
At the end of the 1960s and 1970s, a group organized as the Fourth & Gill Neighborhood Association worked to revitalize the neighborhood. Over the next few decades, the beauty of Fourth & Gill was embraced, and the neighborhood became popular with young professionals who began restoring the homes to their former glory. Today, Fourth & Gill is a popular neighborhood for those who love historic homes, and the restored homes are always sought after when they come on the market.
